Default Dragon Age: Origins (please black out spoilers)

OK so some of you must know about this game, and the rest of you should! It's going to be a fantasy single player RPG, made by Bioware in the vein of Baldur's Gate.

      Homepage

It looks totally awesome to me, I've only patchily been following development, but they've had some big ideas for this game. I'm especially psyched about the history and atmosphere this game is going to have, supposedly religion is going to important, and magic is relatively rare in the world, but special. (Please correct me if I'm out of date on this). Certainly some of the design from Mass Effect seems to be translated to this game; so think conversation sequences with dilemma.

I think they've scheduled release for early 2009.

The only problem for me is that it is PC only for the time being, which means I'd probably have to upgrade to play....

I've been swinging towards fantasy games this week - been OD'd on sci-fi recently with TH!
Who else is gonna be getting this??

Looks decent enough, though the combat still looks dull as hell.

I loved Baldur's Gate 2, and this looks like the next step in that direction, though I'm not sure if I want to go down that path again.

The battle with the big Troll demon thing reminded me of how damn slow BG2 felt, in retrospect.

The Baldur's Gate series is one of my favorite game series of all time. I will definitely be checking out Dragon Age when it hits the shelves. I just don't know how much of the game will be like Baldur's gate, with Black Isle being closed like 5 years ago. Black Isle went from Fallout to Baldur's Gate to Icewind Dale. 3 of my favorite franchises ever in less than a 4 year period. We will see how much the lack of that team affects the game. I am confident Bioware will put out a good game though, BG, NWN, KOTR, and Mass Effect were all games I thoroughly enjoyed.

Thats the one thing holding me back for now about this game. I was interested in the game until I saw the combats at E3...

I'm not much of a PC person when it comes to playing games, but they've certainly caught my attention.

To confirm the points in the first post:

Yes, magic is relatively rare still. Not everyone has the potential to use magic and those that show it are said to be taken away to train in magic. As such, you won't find a Warrior or Rogue type class having magic like Fireball.

And yes, the game is set to be released Early 2009

Between now and then they will be releasing more info and I've noticed this past week some more info has been released. I'll see if I can't find links to some articles.

Well, most of your post is correct but this part is not...

It's coming to an unnamed, but more likely than not you own the system in question because your posting on this forum, console and though I have not seen a street date for the console version mention I think it might actually hit same date and time. (The difference between the console and question and the PC aren't that extreme...)

Well, I was able to find a link to 1 interview. And okay, not much new information but it is something new to read.

      Default Dragon Age: Origins delayed

This sucks, it is the game I am waiting most for. A new Baldur's Gate style RPG from Bioware for those of you who didn't know about it.

Release date got moved from Q1 2009 to "second half 2009". Which probably means Christmas game rush. Until Diablo 3 or this comes out for PC I don't really see myself PC gaming at all.

No it is single player, with multiplayer available. It is like Baldur's Gate or NWN but a completely new series that brings back the party and romance systems from BG that they took out during NWN.

Yeah, BG, ID, and NWN are among my favorite RPG series ever and Mass Effect could wind up there as well. The Baldur's Gate series is my all time favorite RPG IP. It had amazing depth and I still holds up for replay now outside of the dated graphics.

Icewind Dale was actually 3rd party in conjunction with Bioware or using BioWare's engine though, as were Planescape:Torment and The Witcher. Bioware used to do a lot of games with Black Isle, I am not sure what their relationship was though. Black Isle is no longer around so I wouldn't be surprised if at least some of those guys moved on into Bioware.

Bioware has reached the point with me where I will pick up anything they put out and expect it to be great. I would have liked to get my hands on this game this spring but I know it is probably better to wait until it is done to the level they want it at to get the actual release. I hate when games come out bug ridden and lacking polish so a later release date is definitely a better alternative.

Yeah, saw that yesterday. Good side is this might just give me a chance to get a look at the console version I'm holding on buying the PC version until I see gameplay for consoles.

same with me. Bioware is one of the best developers out there, and is probably the best RPG studio. I'm surprised that they weren't able to stay independent longer, and possibly become the Valve of RPGs.

Those origins make me wish those were the party characters in the game.

I hope the actual allies you gain are as interesting.

They are supposed to be, everyone has stories and all the interaction depends on how you act in the game. People in your party can fall in love with you, follow you, argue with you, or even turn on and try to kill you apparently. It sounds very deep. Here is the actual origins link off their site.

      from the kotaku article:

"BioWare pulls back on the curtains of the origins portion of their upcoming PC role-playing game Dragon Age: Origins, revealing the six different roles players can take on as they start their adventure. Players will begin their adventure in Dragon Age: Origin by selecting one of six different characters, each with different stories, backgrounds, and motivations that help determine how the main storyline of the game unfolds. The origin stories feature several hours of gameplay leading up to the main game, with choices made during the preludes influencing dialogue options, story elements, and plot branches in the main game.
The six starting characters run the gamut of fantasy mainstays, from the wealthy human noble dealing with political intrigue to the mage setting off on the final test of his powers. Check out the full list of starting points below to help figure out who'll you'll be once the recently delayed Dragon Age: Origins drops later this year.

      Dalish Elf

As one of the last "true elves", you were content to spend your life wandering with your clan...until a chance encounter with a relic of your people's past threatens to tear you away from everything you've known.

      City Elf

You have always lived under the heavy thumb of your human overlords, but when a local lord claiming his "privilege" with the bride shatters your wedding day, the simmering racial tensions explode in a rain of vengeance.

      Dwarf Commoner

Born casteless in a land where rank is everything, bound as the lackey and thug of a local crime lord, you have spent your life invisible...until chance thrusts you into the spotlight, where you can finally prove whether you will be defined by your actions or your birth.

      Dwarf Noble

The favored child of the dwarven king, you proudly take up your first military command...only to learn that the deadly intrigues of dwarven politics pose an even greater danger than that faced on the battlefield.

      Mage

Gifted with a power considered a dangerous curse by most, you have spent most of your life secluded in the remote tower of the Circle of Magi to be trained and watched closely by the dreaded templars. Now your final test is upon you — succeed and prove your strength, fail and you will perish.

      Human Noble
Born to wealth and power second only to royalty, you find your training in both diplomacy and war put to the test when your father's castle is betrayed from within on the very night your elder brother is to lead the family's forces to war."

I don't know if it will have multiplayer, these are huge RPG games. I honestly don't remember if the original Baldur's Gate did, I never even considered looking. I find these to be some of the best single player experiences available.

Yes, it is supposed to come out on PC and consoles. It will probably release later on consoles though I would assume. The release date isl isted as Nov 9, 2009 now. It was supposed to be in a month or 2.

More party and character development here.

BG2 didn't have multiplayer. Not sure about BG1. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 and 2 did, though, but they were hack-and-slash dungeon crawls, not D20 System RPGs.

I'll be waiting for the 360 version, unless the PC one is on Steam and looks/runs much better.

I was pretty sure it had multiplayer in it from vids I have seen. I'll have to look it up again.

Interesting I read the origins on IGN yesterday. There was much more background on the races and backstories. I went to check again and the info was cut to what Kotaku showed... I guess they told too much =P
