View Full Version : The TH sports fan thread

Since the Duke v UNC thread got some sports conversation going I was wondering who is a fan of what teams. I had a thread like this on a previous incarnation of the forums but it is lost in the nether.

My teams, in order of how rabid my allegiance is.
Red Sox - die hard fan, everyone in my family is, got it from my grandfather
UConn men's basketball
Chicago Bears - tough to watch at times but let that stop me
Boston Celtics - from the real Big 3 days
Boston Bruins - since the Bourque - Neely days
New England Patriots - more due to local allegiance

The one team that doesn't fit in my fan list is Da Bears which I follow due to the fact that my pediatrician when I was little was from the Halas family. They were obviously huge Bears fans given that his family founded the team and actually a large part the NFL as a whole, so my first experiences with the NFL were in that direction. It didn't hurt that they had Payton, Perry, McMahon, Singletary and Gault on those teams, among others.

Teams/things I openly root against
NY Yankees - though I do like Jeter, Rivera, and Posada, and yes I do know more about the Yankees than most Yankee fans, I love Sawx/Yanks history and conversation
Minnesota Vikings/Green Bay Packers - no need to root vs Detroit :)
LA Lakers - also Kobe in general, great player I just can't stand him
Duke basketball - I like Coach K, but just hate the constant Duke slobbering in the media
Notre Dame sports - football and basketball both, so over-hyped, Charlie Weis and Digger Phelps both need to go away
Montreal Canadiens - required as a Bruins fanDallas Cowboys
Brett Favre, TO, Pacman Jones, A-Rod and anyone else who thinks they are bigger than the team they are on.
Frontrunner Fans - people who like all the best teams, i.e. "I am a Yankees/Bulls/Cowboys fan" guy, people who took every first place team from an era and picked them as their favorite.
Crappy TV game announcers - Tim McCarver, Madden, Chris Berman, Joe Morgan, and Greg Gumbel, I am looking at you, stop ruining the games I am trying to watch

I will also watch Nascar in HD when it is on and there aren't a lot of alternatives. I am a huge MMA fan and watch as much of it as I can. I used to follow boxing as well but I have become more and more disenchanted with the sport as a whole as time goes along. I am also not a big NCAA football fan, I watch it but don't follow anything specifically. I am a huge NFL draft freak though, I usually watch both days of it completely.

In general if no team I like is in a game I stick to the following allegiances. NFC, AL, Big East Conference.

I have a profile on ESPN.com and have had some frontpage featured blogs as well as an NFL Draft blog feature but I haven't been on there much since they changed it to more of a Myspace type feel than just sports conversation like it used to be.

NFL and NBA fan:

Seattle Seahawks - gotta love the local team...horrible season though...
Former Seattle Sonics - The Glove baby!!! Will be sorely missed
LA Lakers - Been a Kobe fan for a long time, still have quite a collection of his rookie cards.
Jordan Era Bulls - felt sorry for any team when they thought they had a chance when he was playing...

I'll watch college sports here and there, but I'm mainly there for the Bowl games and March Madness

Maawdawg
02-11-2009, 03:03 PM
March Madness is my favorite sports event, and it isn't close.

Seattle has had a rough couple years in sports, that totally sucks. You would get a kick out of Bill Simmons from ESPN and his articles on Seattle and the NBA team being stolen. He has been on it for a long while now, even interviewing Stern in his podcasts. He is a Boston area transplant living in LA, but he has some interesting takes on sports. His column is as much pop culture as it is sports. It is pretty much what I would write if I had a sports column. He refuses to call the Oklahoma City Thunder their actual name at all, he usually goes with the Seattle Sloppyseconds or a variant.

If you look through his older stuff you can probably find some of it.

At least you get to watch Payton on TV now, he and Webber are AWESOME together for studio coverage. Like Barkley was when he first hit TNT.

Here is a good ESPN the magazine, article on Seattle if you have some time to kill.

You and I are going to get along just fine Dawg...and it will be fun to see CC and Tex destroy Fenway. Someday, when I grow up, I want to burn it to the ground. I want to be sure Pedro is in there too. Even though he is awful now, and a Mut to boot, I still want to see him go up in a blaze!!!

On a side note...are there any fantasy baseball players in here? Perhaps this needs it's own thread? I generally commish a couple yahoo leagues during baseball season and would like to open up invites to anyone interested and willing to participate daily.

KU led most of the game and then just lost it you can't win with 20 some turnovers....
This would have been a different game at Allen....

a great story indeed, and I particularly agree with one of the posters in saying this shouldn't be a story, it should be commonplace.

good find maaw, and I am right there with you where ARod and Favre are concerned. Favre has truly tarnished his character forever in my eyes, and I am not even going to talk about ARod becuase there isn't anything else to say. Everything has been said. It should be done now. Let him live in shame and go on becoming the next asterisked home run king.

Maawdawg
02-18-2009, 01:32 PM
I can already tell you the end of the ARod thing anyway, at some point more info is going to come out and show this current story was complete garbage. A top flight athlete taking injections of something he didn't know what it was, on cycles, for 3 years? Yeah.

His whole story in the news conference was BS and I am positive more info will come out to show it. So far in the 3 steroid interviews he has done his story has changed completely, admitting freely to what everyone knew at the time but denying everything else. Idiotic. Supposedly there is a lot more info to come out in that lady's book. The lady he accused of breaking into his house and stalking him then recanted by saying it was a misunderstanding. How can you misunderstand him saying last week that he "has a police report from the Miami police saying she broke into his house" but now it never happened?

Here is another good story you may have missed, since it was hardly covered outside of CT. The only reason ESPN had it is they are in CT and it was in all the local papers. People kill UConn and Calhoun for having problem players, who always get front page treatment when they do something wrong. When he does stuff like this almost noone talks about it though. He saw one of his starters was having maturity issues so he put his scholarship on hold and got him a real job for a semester to get his grades and life in order. How many coaches would take a top 5 player on their team and sit them for a year to get them straightened out so they can be productive off the court?

I HATED Favre, as was required in being a Bears fan. The thing is, at least I really respected him as a player and person for how he was on the field but now I just see him as another selfish "me-first" athlete. That started way before the retirement thing though, when he called out Donald Driver publicly to sign at a pay cut to play in GB when he never would have thought of doing that.

They may fizzle, but they never crash and burn.
That is the Mets' job. :D

I think the Yankees got some good upgrades but 2 of the big 3 they got do involve decent risk. Sabathia is a good pitcher but doesn't have the best postseason record due to the fact that the Indians (and Brewers) burned him out in the regular season just to get there. If the Yankees can limit his innings a bit he may be more effective, and if he can not eat a whole cheesecake a day while in New York. He also has a TON of innings on his arm already for such a young pitcher.

Burnett just needs to have his arm not fly off. He is one injury from the Yankee fans treating him like Pavano. He got a LOT of money for someone who only won more than 12 games once in his whole career.

Teixeira is a really good player. No downside to getting him in my eyes though unless he gets off to a bad start and the fans get on him. He hasn't handled the big market pressure before.

I am actually going to post the above in the MLB thread (http://www.toohuman.net/forums/showthread.php?t=10055) so we can follow up the discussion over there instead of mixing them together.

About the Cardinals, I have just learned to despise them because they seem to be the Astros' kryptonite. So hate might be a strong word to use, but I'm not gonna like any team that consistently beats my hometown guys. They destroyed us today 11-2. That damn Pujols....

Dude Pujols is a beast! He was awesome for my fantasy leagues today. Count on him being the MVP again. My wife is originally from Houston, and while she is a Steeler's fan (family came from Pittsburgh) she loves the Texans. So she is a transplanted fan. But don't worry. We have DirecTV and she does not suffer from Fan Displacement Syndrome, or whatever the Mannings advertised.

I know what you mean about the kryptonite. The Rays used to be the Yanks', but now that they are a good team for real, it seems it will be the Orioles.

Glad you jumped in for conversation. The site obviously has excellent resources, but the comminity is awesome too!

Well a translpanted Texans fan is still a fan! I say we are some of the most devoted fans out there. I'll also say some of you Yankees fans have gotta be dedicated as well, considering all the ridicule you and your team get.

While I may be a Yankee fan first, I am a LOVER of baseball. I appreciate all aspects (except for its current administration) of the game, and fall in love with it every year more and more. Yeah, I'm kind of a freak about it. I subscribe to MLB Extra Innings and MLBTV so I can be sure I don't miss much action.

Yeah, a Yankee fan takes a lot of grief about many things, but it is understandable. No franchise is as dominant as they are. So a bit of jealousy is to be expected...and I like it!

My cousin is a Vikes fan as well so I am used to the inter-conference thrash talk. The Lion-esses are definitely forgettable at this point, and until they break a 6-10 record will remain so.

I agree that Cleaveland Lebrons and the Heat (AKA the Miami Wades) are fun to watch. The NBA is all about star power now. No other sport is so dependent on having one superstar carry your team.

You're right about the NBA. I used to like the Timberwolves, but then they traded the best player they've ever had and I lost interest. I was a Bulls fan back before the wolves came into existence and after seeing as the wolves were terrible when they started. Watching MJ and Pippen play together was one of the best things I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. I actually went to a game at the Target Center when the Bulls came to town and it was amazing. I got boos from some of the fans near me as I was cheering for the Bulls the whole game.
