The story sounds a little cheesy, but anything with vikings makes me a fan of it. But from the trailer it looks like the sci-fi aspect might be minimal, as there was a lot more swords and catapults than futuristic weaponry (although the heroes armor is pretty cool).

This movie looks pretty far out there, but it should be interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing how they explain the language barrier.

I still haven't seen it, but I like that the box has critical praise calling it the "best movie ever" or some such awesomeness.

I watched this movie this weekend.
I had alot of expectations but was let down through out the whole movie.
*SPOILERS Below
First off he comes off the ship with some badarsh armor and with his dead friend having some aswell he actually had two sets. He never came back to get his armor while he opted to wear viking clothes (leather, fur).
The movie advertised about how he uses futurisic technoligy fused with viking tech... but the only part where he did anything close to this was when he finally went back to his ship and got a side panel from the craft and melted it down into swords.
WOW!!! Not really....
Anyway, once i got over what I wanted to see and just watched the movie for what it was... I watched it twice. It was an ok movie. Good for a rent on a boring day. It will keep you entertained but wont leave you standing in your seat by no means.
Also how did a monster that size "sneak on that ship?" Theres alot that didnt make sense. The norse culture was idiotic... And they even had a christan priest.... WHY???? It seemed that the writers were fans of the idea of vikings but didnt research much and just put actors in fur and leather armor and said talk funny and be a viking.
There where some parts of the movie that looked awsome on my HD and the sound was really cool on parts with the surround sound.
EDIT: Also another thing that bothers me... The viking swords could not hurt the monster, they would break and shatter every time. But they get the new metal and WOW... they can now cut its head off in one clean swing... FROM A GIRL!!

I agree with your overall assessment of the movie - okay movie but not earthshaking. I would offer up the following possible interpretations:
To me the priest is plausible, if you think of him as a missionary. Rough timeline for Viking civilization 800-1100 AD, just as the big C was starting to spread northward. Also on a side note, it was the early Christian church that demonized the vikings. The best targets for viking raids were... monasteries (much epic loot!)
As to the swords, I expect viking swords were made of raw iron and were likely very brittle, again rough timeline is around the tail end of the Iron Age. Modern steel incorporates carbon and other metals to complement and strengthen iron. I can only imagine what metal the spacecraft was made of - dare I say adamantium. Although how they were able to forge the super space craft metal is beyond me, particularly after they used all the oil up in the worst trap ever.
Lastly, I find my expectations have a large impact on my enjoyment of any movie, so I try not to read/watch too many previews or reviews in an attempt to keep an open mind. Luckily, I was surprised to find Outlander on the shelf at the video store, rented and watched it in a couple of days without too much build up... and enjoyed it.
