Not Mirrors Edge! Actual parkour! Anyone practice it? I'm starting to get into it. It's a good bit of fun. Falling on concrete hurts a bit though. Smacking a wall after slipping seconds before a wall run hurts too. Anyone got any tips? I need to work on my rolls, and the distance of my Kong vaults. Discuss.
The cops in my area don't like me playing on the roofs and what not.

i practiced at school today. the dean didnt give a s*it. and just dont get caught, and you should be fine! and people asked me for directions after watching me, as if i hadnt been doing anything out of the ordinary.

Well, yeah, that's the whole idea!
I'd still rather train for the "fight" part of my "fight or flight" response, though.
Bloodwrath970
01-15-2009, 11:09 PM
yeah, as would i. but it cant hurt to be able to get away. pick your fights you know. and it can be an outlet for creativity. which is more in line with free running (more stylized, less efficient).

Bloodwrath, I have to ask, if ur really from Gainesville, are you familiar with Less Than Jake?
Bloodwrath970
01-15-2009, 11:32 PM
Gainesville's a (relatively) small place, but probably not. is that his GT? if so, then i dont think so. I go to school in Alachua, but spend most of my time out in G'Ville, so i dont know many people in either.
Edit: to keep on topic; Neither Gainesville nor Alachua is a good place for parkour or free running. too little, too far between.

No its a band from Gainesville. They're pretty renowned.
Here's their newest cd:

haha. yeah, once i get some stuff smoothed out, work on my fluidity, and find some good lines (for running, not snorting!), i might make a vid.

Well, rolling is by far the most important thing you do, especially from long falls.
Which is hard to do, especially after certain vaults
The cops in my area don't like me playing on the roofs and what not.
My friends are the reason there are cameras on salk :p

When did they put them in, because I still don't remember those. And I went to Salk. Still go play on the roof every now and again too...

Regarding the iPod question, use a wristband. There are special ones designed to keep them in place while running.
I used to practice it a lot a few years ago, my friend is still doing it. He has 4 professional practice sessions a week. He didn't like Mirror's Edge all that much though..

I was actually going to suggest an arm band and just rotate the iPod around to the inside of the bicep between your arm and chest. That area shouldn't come in contact with too much, right?

Right. You might bump it when you're rolling, but that's about the most secure spot on your body except inside any kind of hole. It might slip if it's a regular armband though, get a special one.

The concrete rolls? Well, I was stupid in the beginning, tried to be cool right away. When my spine started hurting, I realized that wasn't the way to go.
Good idea. You should get one of those plastic 3x1cm MP3-players for when you're out running. Costs like nothing and mine can carry 2 GB of music.
And yeah, i wouldn't advice you to use the holes... :(

does running from the cops count? cuz we have to do that sumtimes.....we're not what you could call "pros" but it at least looks kinda cool
Bloodwrath970
01-23-2009, 10:24 PM
yes it counts! and i almost got a referral (the bad kind) at school today. i got on top of the gym! and landed right next to a teacher! he didnt give a s*it, so it was cool. but my co-hort, Stevan, was seen by another teacher, and i was by sheer luck, not seen by him. Stevan kinda saved my ***, by getting out of it, cause id have been next probably.

Me and my friends got beaten up by some 17 year old pricks (they were black. I'm not racist, the reason I'm mentioning this will be revealed later) because they saw us on a roof (I was 13 back then, I'm 16 now). They chased us down on bikes and punched my friend. Now he's racist :(
And all the unforgetable times we've been discoveret climbing roofs and such.

I've always thought this stuff was amazing... I don't really know anyone that does it so I've never gotten in to it. Watching the videos on YouTube and seeing some of the things these people do blows my mind.
The heights and distances they jump and just keep going is mind boggling...
Much respect goes out from me ;)

i probably dont deserve that. i do PK (less flip-y, trick-y), and i am not that good. im just beginning. my leg has been hurtn, but im comin back strong. ill try and get some stuff up on youtube eventually. just rudimentary stuyf, cause theres not much stuff here in Gainesville.

Bloodwrath970
02-25-2009, 12:14 AM

Man there are sooo many places on campus and around Gville in general just begging to be free run. I used to do a bit of it just for fun nothing serious though. Of course this was almost 10 years ago when I lived there. At the time I didn't even know of parkour or that it was a "sport" or anything like that. I just used to like jackie chan films and such and would always enjoy wall running or climbing to achieve the same feeling.
Apparently you just missed a pretty big practice session right there in Gville http://overflux.com/news.php

The best way to learn. not necesarrily the most FUN way to learn (unless you're a massochist). But it definitely does the job. after the first time i messed up a kong vault, im always sure to bring my knees up to my chest if the rail etc is above where im jumping from.

on the topic of my conditioning: i have started to run 3 miles a day, when i dont have fencing. will be running later today. my goal before i leave highschool (class of '11), is 5 miles in >8 minutes per mile or less. 10 brownie points if you can tell me where i got that goal from.

I've been wanting to do this for a while now. Saw a show about it on the Discovery Channel ever since been wanting to try.
How did you get started and learn the stuff? Just by going and seeing what you could do and make you own sort of workout regime or are you part of a team?
OogYan
04-27-2009, 11:18 AM
I started off just doing it street style with my friends, looking at tutorial videos and stuff. I did some bad things, including rolling on asfalt and jumping from 4 meter roofs. My friend was REALLY into it, and he'd probably seen every video about it on youtube, and he concatced the leading PK group in our city, Umeå. It was pretty brave by him, and they held "practices" once a week. Now they're a real group, like a football team, and they train lots of youngstes.
So just run around a bit, grab a friend and get the feel for it. Take it easy and use grass. When you feel ready, contact any pk-organization in the neighbourhood and join practice if possible. Otherwise search for tutorial videos and you'll improve yourself :)
Bloodwrath970
04-27-2009, 10:09 PM
everything OogYan said. But you gotta learn how to roll on asphalt, hell i do. this is one thing that the phrase "It's built from blood, sweat, and tears" is applicable. **** hurts the hands for a while then you get callouses. You fall on your back, get the wind knocked out of ya, get back up and keep goin. trial and error, trial and error.

its easier if you have an adreniline rush, but that isnt always going to be the case, especially if your just doin it for fun. main thing is to not get discouraged and dont do anything that you dont feel quite up to, thats how ALOT of accidents happen
Bloodwrath970
04-28-2009, 12:32 AM

yeah. or if something just scares the s*it out of you for a moment, and you get that amazing jolt, but it fades so quickly. then you're sitting there all weakened. Generally speaking: dont try anything you cant accomplish without an adrenaline rush when you're training.

same here guys. first things you can do (well, first thing i learned to do) is a proper wall climb/climb up. just start out on a small building. i have a small shed, and it was my first step. Then i learned how to get on the roof of my house. if you have a porch with rails, practice vaults (i suggest putting some rugs/other padding, if youre gonna be landing on a hard surface). Exercise, exercise, exercise. The better conditioned you are, the easier you'll be able to preform the actions (abilities-wise, not finesse-wise).

@HeH: Thanks, man. Helps that the photographer was good! My friend Geden. Cool guy. I'm trying to train him.
@Galei: Keep goin', it'll come. That Dash vault took ages to get! Remember: Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice does.
@Anyone else who practices: Get a buddy to come with. Not necessarily to practice, but at least spot you if you get hurt!

lol, enjoy your massive reload times, thats the one thing i disliked about the game.
it was fun and challenging (especially doing the "test of faith" acheivement on the first run through) but the damn reloads for after you die took alot of the fun out of it

Okay, okay, I said in the OP NO Mirror's Edge...
Well, the hospital was a site of interest to us. We were trying to get a pic of me tic-tac-ing from a tree to a wall, and then quickly getting over a fence. Well, a cop came by and told us we had to go, because you can't take pics of gov./state funded buildings... That was a bit annoying...
