SPOILERS DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T COMPLETED STORY MODE.
First off, I respect everyone's opinion even if I don't agree. I say this because my review is not going to jive with all of the praise it seems to be getting from the forum members.
I have beat the game twice (one story mode and another co-op). I have a lvl 47 human zerker and a lvl 15 Cyberzerker. So I think that should be enough to write a decent review.
That being said, I honestly don't see how anyone can rate this higher than a 3/5 or 6/10. Harsh I know, but I now see why some major reviewers gave it a low score.
Overall Game Play Time:
The second biggest flaw in the game
The game feel like a add-on pack that was released before the actual game came out. The agruement of "It is a trilogy" doesn't fly either. This was a short game, almost everyone admits it. The only replay value currently (as it could change with DLC. Please gods let this be the case) is to gather more powerful gear? I don't include playing all the classes because there are some gamers that won't and don't like to. There needed to be more than "dungeon crawling and walks in cyberspace". Side quests would have been an awesome addition. A great chance to lengthen the game and learn more about humans, gods, and the whole too human universe.
Story:
The biggest flaw in the game. I see 9/10s and other high marks for story. Really? I seriously must have missed something or got a bad copy because there was no story. Period. If I hadn't visited Toohuman.net and Too Human Wiki before I played the game, I would have been really upset about the story. Again the trilogy thing doesn't apply. The story should stand a little on its own without the rest of the trilogy completed. It doesn't.
When I played the demo, I expected the rest of the game to flow just like that. A bunch of cut scenes with a lot back story and information on the gods and humans alike. Yeah well you know that wasn't the case. You had to go outside the game to get that information.
I felt more invested in the Wolf Squad than in the Gods. If that was what the game was trying to do, it worked. With all of the random and event triggered conversations the Wolf Squad had, I started to feel bad when they died. When First Wolf was saved by the Valkyrie from the undead, I was moved because he tried to sacrifice himself for his men. All of the dialog between the wolves did that. Now, compare that to Tyr. Try telling me you felt bad when he died? I didn't, heck, the first thing that came to mind was, "geez, will I still be able to repair and buy weapons." You know why, there was very very little interaction with Tyr in the game or any gods for that matter. I wasn't invested in Tyr as a character. Heck, they did a better job with Hod.
Oh and what about the whole Human and cybernetic theme? Other poorly put together aspect of the game. Isn't that one of the main themes? Could have fool me. Yeah sure, Gods are cybernetic and humans aren't, I get that. But I thought Bauldr was suppose to make this big decision to stay as human as he is or go all out cybernetic? It became a matter of what kind of stats do I want. Again, its a trilogy defense doesn't apply.
Combat:
The saving grace of this game. Thank goodness. Noobs will hate it. No, you can't just hack and slash as a zerker. There is some tactics to the game. Oh and the right analog stick combat, freaking amazing. I couldn't imagine how sore my thumb would be if I had to button mash. However, gun combat sucks right now. I haven't played a commando yet so my opinion may change on that. But so far, what I can say is that the targeting system needs a lot of work. I don't need to keep targeting dead enemies or structures. I should be able to target things by staring straight at it and shooting at it. If it is still like that for Commando I will be really really upset.
Enemies/Bosses:
Hmmm. I like the polarity to mix things up but why do I have a harder time fighting the polarities and elites than the actually bosses. I stomped all of the bosses like they were nothing. I died once on the mini-boss in Hel. Stupid "missles"..lol Not challenging at all. I think the demo got me hyped up because I wanted to kill grendel so bad and when I gunned him down (which takes a while as a zerker) I felt let down. I also started to feel like as I leveled the enemies became more cheap than harder. Elite Laser Elves/Freeze Ray Trolls = Cheapest character in game for zerkers if you don't kill them instantly. I felt cheated several times out of a perfect finish when I started because an elite or a poorly placed polarity with camera facing the opposite way.
Learning Curve:
There is not much of one which is good. However, their needed to be something a little better for the noobs. A better tutorial and practice area might have helped them. I didn't feel like I needed one but everyone is different. I felt I could jump right in and start killing stuff, which I did. From lvl 1-30, I gradually felt the need to further my advanced combat moves. 30+ started to demand perfection in some cases which can be fun and frustrating at the same time.
Side Quests:
Ah. What is to distract me from the the main storyline? Visiting cyberspace. Yawn. The quest that the NORNs mentioned in regards to Hod's Eye. Nope. There were none. One of the reasons the game is so short.
Summary:
Yes, it is a negative review. I am sorry toohuman.net members and SK. But I felt let down. This site and Silicon Knights got me really excited for this game. I even got two of my friends to buy their own copy with me because I hype up the game. I wanted this game to be as epic as everyone said it was going to be.
The game let me down. It let them down. Will I buy the rest of the trilogy, YES! The game can only get better. With SK viewing and participating on this forum I know that they will take the information and make an even better game. That is what I am excited for. From viewing the forum myself it seems like Dennis and the rest of SK are a cool bunch of people. SK has their work cut out for them, but I can't wait to see the results. I am glad Microsoft and SK committed to the trilogy! Good luck and see ya in a few years!
