View Full Version : Our Most Misunderstood Game

Just let me start with a short introduction. My name is Devan, I'm a 24 year old Michelin employee from Bridgewater Nova Scotia Canada, and a huge fan of RPG games that include deep character deveolpment. I've been a member on TH.net since january, and am an active member of The Purplenators.
I was a huge fan of Diablo 1 & 2 because of its multiple classes, skill trees, hoards of enemies and great story. So when i had first heard of Too Human 2 years ago i was instantly drawn and became a fan.
Rather then just sitting here and defending Too Human from all the individual complaints, let me just point out some great things Silicon Knights has done for us. And I promise not to take long. Please leave your comments as everyone is entilted to thier own opinion...this is just mine.
Up until 2 years ago I had never heard of SK, but I believe what they have done is something great and deserves credit. A game like this has never been done on a console or any platform for that matter. Mixing deep RPG elements with a very kenetic and action oriented combat system featuring a variety of enemies in Hoardes was something I always wanted in a game. In your face action!! This just sounds difficult in itself, it couldn't have been easy...and it wasn't. I think the final build is something awesome and while it isn't perfect the game still delivers.
I've soaked a solid 61 hours into this game so far and have no intensions of stopping anytime soon. The more I play through the four acts the more detail I notice. The level designs are quite simple however they have some reallly nice scenes. You can tell alot of work went into making each room look fantastic. Even thought the graphics are not the #1 most amazing in the world they are still above par and do not take anything from the experiance. I'm really enjoying the different play styles from each class and their skill tress. I think letting us choose a secondary tree (Human/Cybernetic) is really cool and opens alot more possibilities for us to develope our characters. It's between this and the loot that will keep me playing for much longer. Not to mention the beautiful art work on the weapons/armour characters and scenes.
The emotion set by the characters and their relationships with each other stands out from other games. The last hour or so of gameplay and cinematics had me literally standing out of my seat at 5:30am with my jaw to the floor.
I suppose I could stop it here though I could probably go on paragraph after paragraph. However I believe closing with a BIG thank you to Denis, Henry, Ken, and the rest of Silicon Knights is in order. THANK YOU GUYS, YOUR GAME KICKS ***!

i agree man.
ive been following the game for a while! i was a member of the first toohuman.net before they redid it to what we are used to today (well, yesterday i guess lol).
i never believed the negative press and i always made my own opinions from what i saw and read about from SK.
i too have never heard of SK before Too Human (never had a gamecube, thats prolly why) but now they are by far my favorite developer. ive never seen a developer care so much about the games community, postin in forums and what not.
this game is a masterpeice and im sure TH2 and TH3 will top it. i cant wait :D
thanks again SK.

You two pretty much summed it up!
My judgment of this game was not corrupted in any way by the Reviews. If it was for other people, I'm glad they didn't buy the game as i personally feel Too Human takes a lot of dedication, Which i love in a game :D Not 5minutes on COD4! First game i woke up at 7am to go and buy!

I agree
I have been following this game for long long time, I pretty much played bought every game that resembles Diablo 2 in anyway
This game in my opinion has captured the fun elements of Diablo 2 the best way any "Console" game has ever done
This style of Action/Lootwhoring RPG is a bold step toward blurring the genre line and Im all for that.
Gratz on SK for doing a wonderful job, I cant wait till what SK has for us in the future installments

I've been following this game ever since EGM did a cover story on it i still have the mag i believe it was in 06. When i read this beautiful article on the game i was just amped because i could not wait for a game like diablo to come out on console. Ever since it happend i've told my firneds about it and they too were intrigued.
The demo came out i played that several times and during my first play through i found myself saying out loud "i ____ love this game".The game comes out does bad on reviews. I was like wow, there is no way this game is as bad as they are saying because i played the demo maybe the demo is better than the actual game. So instead of buying it i traded some crappy games and GTA4. I just beleived i would like the game(because of my experiance with the demo) normally i would never trade in my new games but i just knew this game was going to kickass and it did!! I took a risk and im happy about it.
What im pissed off about is a mag/site whose opinions i used to respect gave a horrible review to the game <cough>1up<cough> now normally you take it with a grain of salt but they have never let me down they usually never miss the mark completly i watched there lil review interview with the forced asked questions and i was not impressed at all the problems they were talking about of the game were not even legitimate problems they were just shadows of the rewviers inability to play the game properly.
Anywayz this situation has opened my eyes i do not know why so many reviewers gave it a low score because it makes no sense a hits a hit...viva pinata is a hit...halo 3 is a hit..cod 4 is a hit..vegas 2 is a hit...and too human is god damn hit for reviewers to give this game anything under than a 8 out of 10 or 80% is beyond me.

DUDE... I agree with what you said but I just wanted to say that I lived in the Valley for 5-6 years (Greenwood) and moved up to Dartmouth/Halifax 2 years ago.... small world! I know a couple people from Michelin too.

I'm a shooter fan. Check my gamertag (ericdrum) and you'll see that's what I mostly play. But I'll tell you what, this is one of the most awesome games I have EVER played. It's an instant classic for me. The press reviews this game got are hypocritical and a crime. If buying two copies of the game will insure that SK makes another, let me know and I'll plop down another 60 right now.

Game reviewers are lame. No pay = no say. The only game reviews that mean anything to me are from gamers that put down their own money and buy the game new, and so far their reviews of Too Human have been very positive (including mine).
Well, I think when it comes down to it, I do have to say there are some issues and glitches with the game that would lower the score. (Gamespot was a little unfair). On my first play through I managed to fall into a black abyss and was stuck there til I had to actually exit the game. I did find the camera to be somewhat frustrating until I got used to how it worked and how I could control it better using the different views. Unfortunately, most critics I don't think would play the game long enough to really appreciate it. I think it's the best game I've played in a long time. Yeah it has some issues, but seriously, I love just being able to jump in, destroy hoards of enemies doing some seriously cool *** moves which leaves me feeling like I'm unstoppable.
Either way, it's certainly worth creating the two other installments. I also hope that if SK does in fact complete the other two games, I hope they also keep up with DLC. If they manage to keep this game fresh I seriously see this game sticking around for a long time.
Cheers,

I'm one step ahead of you, already picked up my second copy of the game :D (I needed another for college so my brother wouldn't explode when I took that copy). :P
I had my eye on this game since I saw the trailer way back during the 360's first year. I didn't obsessivly follow the game but just waited then picked it up when available. I was familiar with SK from their past work on the legacy of kain. I thought those games were awesome on the old xbox. Anway I did notice some run off into Too Human from the design in those games. I am referring to the cyber space and altering real world objects via the interface. Very similar to the Soul Reaver stuff.
I never played diablo but people always praised it. I used to play WoW but I got sick of server politics. I have a soft spot for item grabbers. Too Human doesn't differ amazingly from some japanese games of a similar vein as the kingdom under fire and n99. However, I like the universe of Too Human. The game oozes with testosterone. You can actually tell who are the males and who are the females. Unlike the tranny like jap games. After playing Too Human sometimes I feel the need to find a pub and chug steins and have my way with waitresses.
Good game, yes indeed. 8)

Cheers,
But here's the problem, where other games are cut slack, TH is held to some higher standard. I'm a Halo fanboy. I actually loved every game a whole heck of a lot. In the first 15 minutes of Halo 3, I fell between 2 rocks and was stuck. I couldn't die, I couldn't get out, I had to restart the level. And if you've played GTA4, the game with 10s across the board, the controls are completely broken. You constantly get stuck against the wrong cover and get killed. The game then forces you to start the whole mission over again.
I'm not saying TH is without glitches or flaws. Every game has them. It's just perplexing how critics overlook some titles flaws and then nitpick at TH's. Everyone can't like loot games or RPGs, but if you don't, don't even touch the game for a review. I expect that every game critic should go into a review thinking, "Based upon this games concept and goals that it tries to accomplish, if the game pulls them off, I will really like this game." If you can't start the review that way, put it down and give it to someone else. You can't get a person who hates steak to give you objective thoughts on if a steak is good. In my opinion, this game achieved it's goals and gave something to 360 owners that is unique on the console, immensely fun (especially with friends) and a great value.

I'll agree with this. There is a terrible double standard in game reviews now. Instead of games being judged on the thing they should be they are being looked at in a political manner. Nowadays it pays to be a pretty face or popular. If you don't believe this one particular magazine even mentioned that a factor that plays in there game reviews is how much they like the developer. I'll never forget one review that started with a sentence sometimes you have to just overlook the flaws. I won't mention what game or mag but the game got a ten. I don't even read reviews anymore. I look at what type of game and what kind of characters are there. If I like those then I will buy the game. Not because some artsy critic says the game is good. Who determines what can slide for one game and not the next? The whole thing gives me headaches. To make it worse if you call out a critic they just deny everything or waive the no proof flag. Meh.
*Actually, I think it might be better to stear away from the 10's. BioShock got raving reviews. I played the game for 4 days and now it collects dust on my shelf. Ten my arse. I'm sorry I bought the thing.
*The cut scenes in Too Human are amazing. Compare these to Mass effect (another ten) where you have texture pop in every freakin scene. I think I saw one spilt second texture pop in Too Human. I feel bad for developers. Nowadays if a game doesn't score a 9 or 10 you must lose a ton of sales. It's a catch 22. Do you butter up to the creatures who conduct reviews or stay true to yourself?

Who determines what can slide for one game and not the next?
I see what you did there. ;)
I'll also agree with you... I've rarely (if ever) based my game-buying on whether or not it got a good review. I'll either play the demo or go rent the game and decide based on that. I really don't understand why people like being told what games they are supposed to like. How can someone else know what sort of game you want to play? It's ridiculous, IMO.

Yeah ericdrum you've hit the nail on the head. I just wanted to remind ppl of what Silicon Knight has done for us here. We are the main community who give this game the credit it deserves. While it isn't the perfect game it still delivers the goods. Besides ppl there is always room for improvement. NOW...i have alot more Machines to destroy!

A little bit off-topic:
Even Gears of War had unforgivable glitches, like when you were standing in the corner and there was a gun and an ammo box on the floor, and there was little space, and you wanted to pick the ammo, but accidentally picked the gun you didn't want to, there was no means of getting your first-choice gun back, and I didn't even know why, maybe because game needed space for gun-swapping. It happened to me a couple of times. Also, the AI of your team-mates was pretty much idiotic to say the least. It didn't strike me that much, until playing on Insane on co-op split-screen. And about the BioShock, I was a fan before the game even came out, because of my incredible fondness of System Shock, and I do believe that it deserved its praise, and the only serious critique I could take against it, would be from purist System Shock fans.
