View Full Version : Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr. v. Juan Manuel Marquez

Who do you think will win?
I find both fighters to be real competitors, and it should be the fight of the year. Both of them want a chance to dethrone Pacquaio (although, was Mayweather ever dethroned? :D).
I think Marquez is great, but no one can stop Mayweather. I got him in a 9th round KO.
The fight is on Sept. 19th.

Providing Mayweather is on top of his game physically and mentally.. I don't think it will take him nine rounds.. :)

Mayweather is amazing; I think he would beat Pacquiao (although in a close bout). I basically said 9 rounds because I respect that Marquez has had some excellent fights. That includes two very close decision loses to Pacquiao, a KO of Diaz, etc..
I might watch this fight live, so I hope it's good. ;)

I see Mayweather as being in a league of his own when on his game. Nine rounds will be more entertaining than my vision of it for sure.. lol

Like Shayn said.... If Mayweather is on top of his game he will be victorious.
I wish it wernt so but he will duck and dodge and dance around enough to win. ;)
BUT........
Im hoping Mayweather is off on his game and Marquez catches him in a corner and gives Floyd the beating of his career. Heres to hopes!

A lot of FMJ haters out there, eh? Haha, I have noticed not too many people enjoy him. To be honest, I like him. He's just having fun with life (although he is a bit too cocky, but when you're undefeated, you can be ;)).
This should be a good fight, but it really is just a "warm up" for Mayweather-Pacquaio.

My hate for him is not that hes undefeated. Its how he became undefeated.
He took out the most entertaining fighters by playing the points card. He is the demise of boxing because he is not entertaining. Granted towards the end he started actually coming out and giving a good boxing match but that was towards the end of his so called retirement.
Hes the champ... hes boring (minus his comments and ring side shows) but for boxing fans. Yawn to his fighting, his comments and shows are disrespectfull and should be in WWE not Boxing.
EDIT: I will admit that he is a very very very talented boxer. And by all means deserves to be the champ but my dislike for him comes with pay-per-view. I hate buying a fight to watch him back up and jab the whole time while he plays the score card.

It isn't him as a boxer, he is super talented. It his his ring style that makes me not like his fights, like PLOW says above. In part I think it is because he so outclasses most of his competition that he entertains himself by just outpointing them.
Besides that I really dislike nearly any cocky/arrogant fighters in boxing or MMA. People like Matt Serra, Michael Bisping, Tito Ortiz. The only "showy" arrogant fighter I ever really liked was Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker.
He was an amazingly talented defensive boxer who routinely made other high level boxers look like flailing idiots. He threw punches from every angle and people just couldn't defend against it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjTHLPmfBCQ
Around 3 minutes into the video it gets really good, that is when he gets into "show mode", around 3:40 he makes De la Hoya look blind at the end of a round of one of their fights.
Plus he was a southpaw, which is awesome all on its own.
great article on him

Whitaker v Chavez is still the best boxing exhibition I have ever seen. It is also the worst robbery by the judges of a fight I have ever witnessed.

Much like Roy Jones jr, it's a love/ hate thing.. His ability can't be denied, but sometimes people in those positions develop too much ego.

I think his ego is purely made up for attention. Attention that pays the bills. Unfortunatly I think if he were a more positive attention seeker I would like him more. I dont play well with the villian vs. hero routine in boxing.

All ego is actually "made up" for attention, but I see what you mean, and agree. There are many other ways to get attention, although I can't think of a boxing Champion that was ever humble... The "persona" of Mayweather and Jones are a reflection of the young Ali.. I guess it happens when you realise you are the best boxer in the game.
I think with Mayweather its amplified by the fact that boxings fanbase has decreased since MMA became mainstream. It's about putting on this massive act to get attention for his fights so they make him money.

Not crazy about FMJ's personality at times but he is by far the best out right now and one of the most talented boxers I have ever seen.
If he takes the fight serious and trains properly I see anothe reasy win for him, he is that much better than the rest right now.

I don't get why people think boxers could just walk into an MMA fight and win. It is a huge pet peeve of mine as I know a lot of "boxing snobs" who have watched boxing for a long time and look down on MMA altogether like it is an inferior product with worse athletes.
Mayweather himself talked about going to MMA then got talked out of it. Any person who is good at only one facet of fighting gets exposed in MMA because those fighters are so well rounded.
Some of the strikers in MMA are just as talented in striking as Mayweather, just not purely in boxing. It is normally kickboxing or muay thai that MMA guys specialize in, even karate in rare cases like Machida. It isn't like they wouldn't know how to defend against a punch.
FMJ would win a boxing match against most MMA fighters but wouldn't stand a chance in an actual MMA fight. Long story short most people who go to the "Boxers would kill MMA fighters" argument just haven't watched enough MMA to understand or appreciate the skills involved in it.
Put FMJ in a MMA fight against any of the guys in the top half list below and he would be hard pressed to last a round. They are all in the comparable weight class as him. Whoever fought him would just take him to the ground. Besides FMJ isn't a punch power guy, he is a speed punch guy.

I feel the same way, I loved Gatti fights (one of my all time favorites) and Hatton is great to watch. I understand the technical point fighting, I just don't like it. It is boring to watch 2 fighters circle and paw at each other for 10-12 rounds.

Your probably right. Pac's going to bring the fight while FMJ is going to dance back and take jabs and quick shots. To take the score board.
Pac is going to push the fight making him tired and vulnerable to shots. Then last minute FMJ is going to release a fury of punches to signify he is dominating another brawler.
O' wait, I just re-capped the FMJ vs Del la Hoya fight! :D

That is exactly Floyd's style; he is not aa brawler by any means. If he needs to do that to win, he should do it. The sport is called BOXING, and he will have out BOXED Pacquiao. There is no reason to defer from what is working; he is one of the best pure boxers of all time, and that is how he wins. If he goes out and trys to out punch PacMan, he will probably lose.

Ive been through so many debates of FMJ with so many people. So heres my key points I want to make. For my starting bases I want to say that Ive been a boxing fan since the mid 80's and hated UFC because I was boxing fan boy (things change though).
FMJ is the best boxer right now with out a doubt.
FMJ is the love and hate of boxing. He is so good at boxing that he takes the fun out of it or maybe I should say the entertainment from the sport.
Boxing fans want to see two people technically, skillfully, and grudgingly go at it. Two boxers giving it there very all with one man standing in the end. Basically people want to watch a Rocky movie but in real life.
Truthfully in my mind, a good boxer is one that doesnt get hit! This is FMJ. And I will never not say that he isnt great or one of the best because he is! I just dont find him entertaining. I cant wait till hes done because hes so good I find him to be a drain on the sport and fans are starting to yawn. Much like i did which is when I started getting into UFC. I get my show there and its hard to play the score card. Your pretty much garanteed to see two guys go at it and give there all and see how all there skills help them win the match.
Boxing is my first love but as of the last 2 years or so ive been spending more and more time with MMA.
EDIT: I wanted to rephrase something. Most fans would rather see a knock out beast pound for pound fighter beat the crap out any opponent rather than the quick skill full technical boxer any day.
So the debate really is what type of boxing fan are you. Im the type that will take a Tyson over a Mayweather any day. Thats the type of fan I am. I want to see a boxing match.

Mayweather is definitely the best and I don't see him losing to Marquez. I was really into watching boxing for a while, but I too prefer MMA now.
How about that 7 second KO from Todd Duffee at UFC 102? You can't do much better than that in your UFC debut.

sorry to burst most of your bubbles but mayweather is the fastest boxer in the ring even after taking a couple years off which means that he trained harder so he could be better than before. so...he is probably better than 2 years ago which you cant say for pac man. mayweather knows how to play his speed advantage to the best of any boxer i have ever seen so unless pac man gets in a lucky haymaker to knock out mayweather im sayin mayweather gets yet another technical win over yet another opponent.
i dont see mayweather losing til he moves up a weight class or two but he isnt going to because he wants his perfect record to stay intact.

Floyd is probably the best all around boxer in welterweight right now. He showed up to fight last night, and seemed to be playing with Marquez last night. If he hadn't lightened up, a KO or TKO would have been inevitable.
And yes, he has seemed to improve with his time off. Which makes you think; how much better can he get? This was, in a way, just a tune up for Floyd. He took a 2 year break, and needed to get warmed up before the "bigger" fights. He succeeded, and against the #2 P4P fighter in the world.
I hope to see Mayweather fight Mosley before he goes after Pacquaio; that way he will show the skeptics he does have what it takes to beat anyone in the ring.
And why would he move up in weight? You do realize he started his career in a much lower weight class, and moved up. To move up more, he would be loss any chance of reach or height advantage. That would just be stupid.

Pacquiao basically called out Mayweather in an ESPN.com interview yesterday. Pretty interesting stuff. I really hope this fight happens. Paq v Cotto should be a good fight too. If Paq wins that then he can really start calling Floyd out. I want to see that fight bad but I think there is a much better chance of Mayweather v Mosley as his next fight.
