So I want to start reading comics again, but since I stopped reading the mainstream comics (Marvel/DC) a lot has changed, and there's way too many different series for each character for me to keep up with and wade through.
So, all you comic geeks who are still actively collecting/reading, do you have any recommendations?
I'm mainly looking for mainstream characters (Iron Man, Batman, Hulk, etc), but I am not adversed to checking out some independant books.
On my list I already have Watchmen, the Civil War GNs, and the Planet Hulk GN.

Spawn... :D
Brilliant art and a deep story.. Then he teamed up with Batman...

If you haven't, I highly recommend reading the Age Of Apocalypse arc for X-Men. It's by far one of the best I've read.
Also, House of M (the arc before Civil War, as I recall).
There's a recent DC arc for Green Lantern where Sinestro dies as well, as I recall. I heard it was quite good.
Oh, and the Sin City comics (you said graphic novels, right?). Especially A Dame To Kill For and Hell And Back.

Thanks for the responses, guys.
I gave Spawn a chance when it first came out, I dug the character idea and all but I couldn't get into it for some reason.
I read the Age of Apocalypse arc (I love Apocalypse!)..I forgot about House of M, that's the arc where all the mutants lose their powers cause the Scarlet Witch freaks out or something, right?
Do you know how far along into the story the Green Lantern arc is? I don't want to have to hunt down back issues...especially not for a popular character like Green Lantern.

I think the GL arc has been over and done with for some time now. Not sure what it's called though, or if it's in GN form.
House of M's outcome was that most mutants lost their powers (or some simply lost control of them), due to Scarlet Witch's last wish (spoiler alert, so I won't say any more).
Probably my favorite moment in Age Of Apocalypse is when Apocalypse gets his *** handed to him :-P

Star Wars Legacy-Very well written with plenty of twists.
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic-Good underdog story, though the art is sometimes iffy as they seem to like to change artists every few issues.

I've read Kingdom Come and, while it's not the worst GN ever, it felt short and fairly dull. There were some notable moments (ex. Captain Marvel), but the ending in regards to Superman was so ridiculous.

i'm a huge spider-man fan, but i can't really 100% recommend it as they have screwed up the character so much in the last 2 years, a lot of the new transformer books are really good, writing/art i would recommend that

The "Peter Parker, Spider-Man" Civil War collection of stories was one of the most moving, memorable graphic novels I've ever read.
The Mary Jane and Aunt May portions, in particular, had some of the best writing I have ever seen in my life.

Marvel: Civil War
Iron Man: Extremis
DC: Infinite Crisis
Secret Invasion - art is kinda hit and miss. It's okay, overall.
