I have been wanting to play Eternal Darkness for a few years now, but never got the chance, since I didn't buy a Gamecube. I don't want to buy a Gamecube for a single game.. so I think I'm just screwed.

Anyone else in the same boat as me? Feel free to post how awesome a game it is and make me feel worse..

I wanted to play this game aswell... I remember it coming out but Nintendo didnt promote it very well at all....

SK must of made fun of all the console holders moms or something!! But then again Nintendo never really promoted "violent" games all that well... I say violent but maybe I should say "dark".

It looks like an awsome game though and maybe a number 2 should be in store??? ;)

I'm with you on this wiiggin.
How about you guys stop posting for a while and play this game first.

Think of this game as more of a Silent Hill type of game, than Resident Evil, then you'll know what to expect from it.

Everyone was saying how ET was a RE clone and boy were they wrong!! this game is many levels ahead of what RE1 did back then.
Sk really needs to make a sequel to compete with the Resident Evil's and the Silent Hills out there, SK really needs to show them how stories and horror are done once again.

Cheer up fella, Eternal Darkness isn't the be-all and end-all, besides, surely you have a friend or relative that has a Gamecube. The six degrees of separation exists for Nintendo products these days.

If not you could probably get an emulator or something.

One of my favorite games...of all time ;) thats right.

Anyways, for those who haven't played it, it really is worth picking up a Gamecube to play (imo). Gamecubes can't be worth more than 20-30 bux these days. Hell, I got mine for 40 bux Canadian over a year ago.

Other than that though, you could always wait for it to be emulated on Dolphin.

Doesn't look like it will be running in the too near future though

Thanks for the kinds words everyone!

Eternal Darkness works perfectly on the Wii - best to get a classic gamecube controller. Its one of the first things we tried when we picked up our first Wii at the office.

If you've got a Wii or Gamecube laying about collecting dust, dust that off and get a copy of Eternal Darkness!

*fingers crossed for a possible game in the same universe at some point*

I got about halfway into ED before I got sidetracked by other games. Still have it on-hand, so I'll probably pick it up again sooner or later.

It's a good game, though I'm hoping it gets better towards the end (kind of feels a bit short every time I jump into one of the flashback sequences, so I lack a strong connection to most characters). The horror vibe of the game is very unique IMO; different from Resident Evil, Silent Hill, etc.

I firmly believe all games should have sanity effects. Definitely one of the most unique aspects of the game, and done so well.

Castrum, I found myself gaining stronger connections to the characters when I replayed the game for the final ending and just for kicks after that. As I replayed I saw new things in the cutscenes and explored new parts of the levels, and the experience really came alive with multiple play throughs. I thought it was very much like a film in that way: watching Fight Club or The Sixth Sense again after knowing the plot twists and picking up on the little cues and hints and clues made the experience that much more interesting and engaging.

But wouldn't that dilute its uniqueness? How interesting would insanity effects be if they became the new "recharging shields"?

Not all popular mechanics are bad, though.

Castrum
04-22-2009, 01:31 PM
"Bad" isn't really the question here though. It's more a question of how much you would appreciate the design decision if it was ubiquitous. Obviously you don't see threads being made in this day and age on how amazing rechargeable shields are in Halo 3 (well, maybe once from a newbie, but otherwise no).

I'd definitely suggest trudging on. For me, the story didn't really click until about half-way through the game, this in my opinion, is due to the fact that one of the main characters in a sense in the Roivas family itself. The connections between all the characters and chapters definitely becomes more compelling and of course clearer the further you get into the game.

How far did you get by the way? Its definitely a long game (I believe I spent 22-24 hours first play-through).

I got to the "Heresy" part of the game (Chapter 7).

Cubes are rather cheap at this point. You may as well get a Wii and Resident Evil, Resident Evil Zero, Twin Snakes and Eternal Darkness. I still haven't made my mind up about the latter, though.

On a sidenote, Nintendo apparently deciding not to release Project Zero IV in North America and presumably Europe is close to ridiculous. They should get their act together and slightly diverge from the somewhat shallow gaming they have focused on with the Wii. That's of course just my personal opinion as a consumer. Business-wise it's hard to argue about what they have done.

That Zelda disc mentioned in another thread with 4 games including the original two for NES would also be worth it.

This could go on for a while as we all think back. :)

Like nothing you have ever played.

No, in all seriousness, it's a third person psychological "horror" game with a deep story and interesting mechanics. It uses an uncontrollable camera (e-gads! In an SK game?! Actually, it works really really well, as the levels were designed around the semi-static angles. None of that auto-adapting convolution that causes TH's camera to spaz on occasion), a set of "sanity effects" that must be experienced to fully grasp, and a magic system surprisingly robust. Melee combat allows for the targeting of specific limbs, and the same goes for the (few) ranged weapons. Plays similarly in mechanics to the original Resident Evil, but has a vastly different feel.

I've got class, so if someone could pick up where I left off? If not, more later.

Think of it as a unique Horror game, thats more inpired by H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe, and I'm sure numerous other points of literature, instead of the typical B-movie camp of the RE games.

The game centered around a central family, the roivas family, who in previous generations have been accused of witchcraft, and even insanity, but in truth carry the burden of a dark secret truth and relic.

Each 'stage' in the game brings the player to different time periods, each with a different playable character, the levels of which were sometimes based on true (and disturbing) events.

One of my favorite parts was definitely the insanity effects. With these, whenever your character would experience a traumatic event, the insanity meter would fill, and gradually, your character would become more and more delusional. Basically, as this happed, the game would start messing with your head.

I've kept TP and RE 4 and sold Prime. I wouldn't suggest getting either game, if it's about personal preferences and top games, at that. The newer Metroid games, I think, are overrated, the same goes for the latest RE games.

I played through this game 4 times in a row - SO awesome was Eternal Darkness! :)

Fantastic story, excellent sound(effects) and the possibility to change the game experience (other cutscenes/enemies during the game) by selecting the main enemy at the beginning of the game.

Yes, this game alone is reason enough to buy a GameCube (or a Wii) to play this fantastic horror/thriller game - do it! ;)

Cubivore is a cool, weird little game for the gamecube. It wasn't a big hit over here, but I think I read it was pretty big overseas somewhere. It's not one of those games that's worth buying a cube or Wii for, like ED is, but if you've already got one of the 2 and want to try a little weird game then pick it up.

Any game where you mate with other weird little things is ok by me. :D

I thought ED lost steam toward the end. I really liked the present day Middle Eastern story (being vague to avoid spoilers) but playing through the same large hidden area underground with 2 characters was too much.

I really love the game, though. I played it 3 times in VERY distant succession (the last one was right before TH came out!) so the sanity effects got me a-plenty.

Not releasing Project Zero 4 is a shame.

This is one of the greater shames Nintendo has heaped upon themselves in the last year.

To their credit, though, maybe it wasn't very good. I find that hard to believe, but it's possible.

That's highly unlikely. Considering the number and quality of the Wii's core games this decision is even more outlandish.

I'm just playing devil's advocate. Sometimes even Nintendo deserves some open mindedness, though they won't usually get it from me.
