This guy is an amazing fighter. I watch his fights and am really impressed with his ability to keep total control throughout the whole fight. Can't wait to see him finally lose though; that's going to be an epic fight. (This may have happened already, because I don't keep totally up to date with UFC ppv events)

He has to lose at some point. :)

He is just plain amazing to watch. I don't think I know a person who watches MMA who doesn't love watching him. Ender you need to jump into the MMA thread, we have had some decent conversation in there about MMA.

Silva is a beast. The funny thing is, most people don't realize that he has amazing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills to go with his incredible striking. He usually just annihilates his opponents on his feet and doesn't need to use his ground game.

Yeah, if he actually gets beat it will be in the stand up I think. Someone is bound to get a big (or lucky) shot on him at some point. I just don't see anyone beating him on the ground

He got taken down in PRIDE.... Good video to youtube if you havnt seen the insane ninja move that brought the beast down. :D

But he is an amazing fighter... Great to watch becaue he is skilled in so many different ways. Truley one of my favorite fighters.

Silva is awesome. I've been a big fan of his since Pride.
I thought when Pride merged with UFC that most the Pride fighters would dominate like Silva has. It hasn't quite worked out like that, but I've gained a new respect for the UFC and White since.

I do still think Fedor would own the heavyweight division in UFC. :D

So I watched some vids of Silva over the weekend, I can see why he gets so much attention, he's definitely good. In reading about him though, there's a lot of accusations that he doesn't really fight tough opponents, and stays in a weight class that he can easily dominate. I'm not familiar with the MMA organizations at all, any truth to that?

He has defended his title 4 times in the UFC already so he has definitely taken on the top contenders in his weight class. I don't really see him as ducking good fights. Once he became champ he really lost the ability to dodge people even if he did it earlier in his career. UFC picks the people he fights and ranks people for title shots, he doesn't get to pick who he fights I don't think. He fights Thales Leites on the 18th of April who is 14-1 and one of the best ground guys in the sport. His last handful of fights (see link below) have been against mostly strikers and Rich Franklin was coming off a layoff or injury I think, but the guys in that list certainly aren't slouches by any means.

The weight class thing may be viable but if you find a place you are dominant why mess with it? He is so big and lanky for a 185lb guy, he has a definite advantage in most fights so it is only smart to stay there.

Since you are just getting into UFC I highly recommend watching SpikeTV on Weds night (tomorrow). They have a whole "fight night live" on which is basically like PPV-lite. Following that is the premiere of new season of The Ultimate Fighter reality show. It is really good TV and it will give you a chance to get to know some fighters on their way into the UFC. Once you know some fighters and build rooting interest one way or the other the fights become even more enjoyable.

Silva's recent fight at 205lbs was over in a few seconds.. and I wouldn;'t say the opponent was "unworthy" either. He said after that fight that he'll jump between the two depending on the fights he can take. if someone challenges him at 205lbs he'll do it, but as long as he's Champion at 185lbs he will do the, perhaps honorable, thing, and defend that title until he loses it or completely runs out of competition.

I'd like to see him move up to 205lbs as there is a lot of talent at that weight.

Interesting, especially about his upcoming fights. And yeah, I'm completely ignorant of UFC rules and organization in general so I was just curious.

I'd like to watch some UFC fights but I don't have SpikeTV at home. (I don't watch TV at all, really, so I only have the most basic cable available.) I might be able to check it out online, though. Hmmm...

IMO the only guy I see giving Silva any problems is Damian Maia, supposedly he is up next after Letes.

I think he is trying to say Georges St. Pierre would beat Silva or something? I agree something more elaborate would help.

http://www.ufc.com/index.cfm?fa=fighter.detail&pid=330

GSP isn't going to come up to 185 to fight him he has plenty of competition at 170, and he will definitely have a bJ PEnn rematch befor ehe gets to start hopping weigh classes. 170 is too low for Silva to go, he is huge for 185 and fights fine at 205. If Silva keeps dominating 185 he will have to move up and then you will never see a GSP vs Silva fight, and even now it is super-questionable. GSP is a good fighter but I don't like the chances of anyone moving up to fight Silva. Besides Silva's takedown defense and striking are the kind of thing that would give GSP fits.

As much as I like St.Pierre I really don;t see him being able to beat Silva, primarily because of the size.

Silva will move up eventually, unfortunatly he may have to lose first, but we'll see. I'm interested to see how Silva contends with some of the best at 205lbs. I would like to see how he'd fight someone like Rampage or Forrect Griffen who may not have the level of skill Silva does, but would seemingly out match him in toughness and strength... Basically just to find out just how tough Silva is along with his skill.

Jackson vs silva would be an awesome fight. I think Jackson would come out on top but silva would hold his own.

i believe Silva would win that, hes to energetic and is clearly faster then rampage, i reckon he would beat rampage if he went up.

Rampage is a tough guy, but Silva's striking skills are on a completely different level when compared to most MMA fighters. If Rampage was able to take him down, Silva's Jui Jitsu is great too. The only way Rampage could win is if he caught Silva with a lucky punch.

The whole point of him criticizing your post was that it really lacked content and didn't at all apply to the original topic.

As ender said before he isn't a die hard MMA person or who follows it regularly. New fans aren't going to know the nicknames and abbreviations of all the fighters right away.

I'm sure some of you saw silva's last fight. Very disappointing, for such a great fighter he performed very poorly. He has now progressed to the stage where he no longer puts on a great show but instead does just enough to win. This seems to happen with alot of champions, and even though I don't blame him because a win is a win, I will refrain from buying anymore ppv where he is the main event.
