So what is people's opinion on this idiotic move by the Sci-Fi Channel?

I just don't get it.
It's the Science Fiction channel...which means "SciFi" makes the most sense.
Why did they change it to Syfy?

They're trying to brand themselves.. but I don't think that's a good idea; everyone knows SciFi original content is absolute trash.

I call it HORRIBLE rebranding.

First I've heard of it, and it's yet another example of how irrational marketing people can be in a closed environment. :)

The president of the soon to be called "SyFy" channel said that they did it as a means to break the stigma that all they were about is monsters and aliens and that they were hoping to open up the channel to more viewers that see the science fiction label and run the other way.
I think renaming it syfy is kinda a step in the other way though. The name seems more fanboyish and corny then ever now.

But...that is all they're about.... At least, all the programming they ever have on(outside of infomercials) supports that.

The movies that they come out with are trash, I will agree with you there.
But they have had some badass shows
Batlestar galactica
Stargate sg-1
Stargate Atlantis
Eureka
Farscape
First wave
And they do have some shows coming up that look pretty cool too
Stargate universe
Caprica
And warehouse 13(maybe it'll be good)

That was my thoughts too. They are probably gonna start airing cops and cheaters pretty soon :p

I would have to agree with everyone here on the "SYFY" deal, although I'm not as mad about it as what happened to "G4!"

What I don't get is why instead of changing to "Beyond", which was what they originally planned to change it to, they changed their mind to something bad. I can understand that since Sci Fi is a genre they can't use the name as a brand, as well they aren't really a sci fi channel anymore, I mean wrestling come on. Beyond though would have been a good name, and still brings fourth the idea of their core shows. This though, and the things they have said, just have alienated their audience. If anything this will bring their death, not more viewers. Maybe instead of trying to distances your audience you should try and embrace them. Instead of having made for TV movies, get the rights to the Star Wars, Star Trek, and other sci-fi movies to play. Replay old sci-fi shows like Star Trek:TNG, or Firefly. Instead of having your main shows on on a Friday night, have them on on a Wednesday when you are more likely to get an audience. Stop alienating your audience, embrace them, and use your money wisely. You have shown you can come up with brilliance occasionally (Stargate, Eureka, Battlestar), but then you try to be like ABC Family and have made for TV movies. The difference is sci fi isn't as easy to make as something for a middle school/high school girl. Not only does everything have to stand up to a higher standard since it is going to be targeted to an older audience, it is also more expensive because of the CGI and the sets.
