The university of texas at dallas has made Artificial muscles that out preform the real thing in almost every way. A composite material, called carbon nanotube aerogel sheets, has many potential uses ranging from artificial limbs to more life like robotics.
The muscles which are said to be nearly as light as air are light years away from the it's most advanced predicesser. Human muscles can expand at a rate of 50% a second. The closest synthetic muscles have came before is 20% per second. The new muscles developed by UT at Dallas expand at a rate of 37,000 % per second. That's rght they're better then your own muscles by a factor of 700. I can't wait to see what they come up with for these high tech muscles. Oh and did I mention that they're stronger then steel!

I smell the onset of cybernetic enhancement.
Oh, and did I mention SkyNet?

We have the technology... we can rebuild him....

Although I imagine they have a ways to go before they start sticking it in humans. I imagine muscle of that strength would break the bones supporting them.
I'm picturing Jax right now from Mortal Kombat!

Screw sticking it in me.... Just make me some sort of Iron Man suit or some Cyber Armor so I can finally start my hellbent idea of destroying this world and every thing in it!!!
I guess someone is going to have to get a suit aswell thats a little bit better than mine so I can have a arch enemy, a so called "Hero" thats out to stop my most awsome plans....
You always need a yin to your yang... ;)

This is really an interesting development. Now we need scientists and technology to give us artificial nerves.

I just want to wear a power suit... like Iron Man... or Samus, of course. This looks like a step in that direction!

Yep, they most likely would break the bone. The natural muscles you have now are actually held back by your brain because they have the strength to break your bones.
I think it would be mostly implemented in amputees, where they would have to create an artificial limb and that is where the muscle would be put in. It would probably be covered by a synthetic skin to make it look more natural and so that when you bend your arm, the artifical muscle contracts like a normal muscle would. Short answer: Make it look like a real human arm.
Definitely wouldn't be something I'd have done just to have it done. As Ender mentioned, you wouldn't have nerves so you wouldn't be able to feel your arm. You could be sleeping and it could be doing things on it's own...like making soup or something.

Whoa, me too!
This was back when I was attending Missouri State University. I was in my bed, drifting to sleep, when my right arm jabbed out hardcore, like I was trying to elbow someone extremely hard. I was like.. wtf.. I did not tell my arm to do that. Good thing my girlfriend wasn't there that night; she would have had a broken nose!

Hahaha I can do you one better!
I was having a dream that I was hugging my girlfriend (currently my fiance). All of a sudden I hear "...cough! You're choking me!" and I'm getting punched. I wake up and my arm is around her neck! Oops!

I have had a simalar instance but i was slightly intoxicated hehehe. At my friends batchular party i ended up falling asleep on the basement couch and i was dreaming about being in a fight. The issue with these muscles is that you'd need to almost be completely cybernetic. Your human body couldn't command power like that without causing it great distress in joints, ligaments, supportive muscles. You could tear something on the left side of your body lifting something with your right with that kind of power.
Skynet, ha! That's kind of funny and kind of frightening. I could see all these rich folks freezing themselves and their heads in cyogenic chambers try and transfer their conciousnesses into cybernetic bodies.

Samus, of course.
!
Of course. ;)
It is a very inspiring idea. I support humanity using technology to improve themselves physically. I pray the stear clear of the mind, at least for now. Apart from the obvious connections that must be made in order for us to control the technology. Even that has freightening posibilities. Despite that, this is an accomplishment.

Of course, your bones alone wouldn't be able to support the snap in these muscles. However, what if you were wearing an exoskeleton of sorts? All the stress would be handled by the exoskeleton, giving you super strength, and protect all those goodies inside :).
I'd be all over that.

If you look-up power armor you can find that the US Military (or NASA, or both) had developed a suit a number of years ago to serve as an exoskeleton. The problem was simlilar to Iron Man's; no sufficient power source to run long-term. It would perform lat pulldowns with the weight stack maxed without a problem.
This is the wikipedia article, but you can find other, more advanced models from various countries and companies on the net.
