Lets talk about the old American epic that is the Brotherhood of War series by W.E.B. Griffon, a nine-part book story of soldiers from the years in World War II, to 'Nam about a story of all connecting sometime, someplace or another with each other and forming friendship, love, enemies, and other interesting things.
This series is long (400+ pages per book), and very interesting. You'll love all the characters, as there is no "good" one. Everyone just as much of a dark side as a good side to them like everyone else, making each character unique in their own way. Mostly revolves around the Army, however, it also includes characters from the other branches. From either fighting the frontlines in a war, to fighting amongst the branches about which branch should control what, to other such things that either make or break a person.
Politics, war, love, betrayal, and most importantly friendship. The Brotherhood of War series is truly an American epic, even Tom Clancy says so.
