Just a thread to recommend lesser known or older movies that most people might not have seen, like Dr. Strangelove, that you think people should watch.

I thought Casino Royale's whole love story angle was far too drawn-out. IMO, OHMSS had it right: action, kissy scene, more action, action, kissy scene, action, saves girl, final battle, happily ever after and then

***SPOILER***

she gets killed, leaving Bond to weep over her body. I felt it had a lot more impact (and it sure surprised the hell out of me) than Casino Royale's extended "loving stares" sequences, followed by chick-death scene and then Daniel Craig going all Bond Pierce Brosnan-style again. The villain turning out to be a big pussy also left me with a strong distaste for the movie (Bond villains are supposed to be at least seemingly-powerful until Bond or one of his crew end up feeding him to piranhas or some ****).

I haven't seen Quantum of Solace, so I can't comment on that.

EDIT:

Can't believe I forgot The 13th Warrior. Antonio Banderas' best movie.

I also forgot 3:10 To Yuma. That was a good Western.

And I would have added Pan's Labyrinth, but I figured most people must have seen it by now (though I'm likely mistaken).

Pulp Fiction and American History X are two of the greatest movies ever, of course in my opinion.

Pulp Fiction is just downright hilarious at times, but isn't really a comedy. Samuel L. Jackson's best movie.

American History X is one of the very few movies that can actually stir up strong emotions in me. Believe it or not I actually watched this in high school, and just about every girl in the room was crying at the end.

If you don't mind watching movies without paying for them, you can go to www.watch-movies-links.net. It's a website that has links to stream movies on your computer, but the quality can be pretty hit-and-miss sometimes. Also, if the link takes you to MegaVideo, you can only watch 72 minutes before it cuts you short. Otherwise, a pretty good website.

Here is just a quick list of some older films that are good. I would not be surprised if you could not find them.

Philadelphia Story (1940) - James Stewart, Cary Grant, and Katharine Hepburn—that’s all I am going to say

Auntie Mame (1958) - A crazy 1920’s flapper has to take care of her nephew

Bringing Up Baby (1938) - Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn—it’s a comedy with a leopard.

White Christmas (1954) – Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye with music from Irving Berlin.

Citizen Kane (1941) – if you have not seen this movie yet I am surprised people think of it as one of the best movies of all time.

Bridge over the River Kwai.

One of my favorite movies as a kid. In that same vein I also really enjoyed Stalag 17 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046359/

There was this Australian movie called The Rage in Placid Lake that was ridiculous, I balled my eyes out laughing. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0305999/

A recent movie that I saw that was way better than I expected (WWII movie) was a movie from the Netherlands called Zwartboek ("Black Book"). Absolutely a must see. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0389557/

Blade Runner (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083658/)
You must absolutely give Blade Runner a watch. You don't know sci-fi until you've seen it. I think if you're a fan of Too Human though, you probably already know about this film and the themes it represents.

Brazil (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088846/)
One of my alltime favorites, think Orwell's 1984 meets Monty Python. Because that's exactly what this film is, and it's hard to imagine anything else when helmed by Terry Gilliam. In fact, you should watch any movie made by this director, his Monty Python films alone don't make him justice by a long shot.

Akira (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094625/)
Despite being an avid anime watcher, I must admit when people say anime is mostly **** they're actually right. Some works however, unfortunately go unnoticed because of this noise. Akira is one of them. Gruesome, gritty, inspiring and from a time when anime was very different from what it is today, it's an absolutely awesome film.

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082694/)
The best thing to come out of Australia, ever. Mad Max 2 focuses more on entertaining action than anything else. Still it's very much able to stands on its own though thanks to some unique directing and characters. But above all, it contains a legendary 20 min long, 100% CGI-free, must-see car chase.

What's interesting about all of these films is that they all share bleak dystopian settings along with some very unique/bizarre but unforgettable endings. I fear they will probably haunt my dreams forever ;)

In regards to Citizen Kane's legendary status, refer to a few of these reviews, most notably (if it is to be believed) "why did Citizen Kane create such an impact upon its first release?":

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033467/usercomments

The Breakfast Club and Fight Club are also good choices, Shawshank Redemption as well:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088847/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0137523/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111161/

As much as I enjoyed Boondock Saints, I wouldn't classify it as one I would personally buy, but meh:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0144117/

Blade Runner isn't one of my favs, from a purely cinematic perspective, but the themes it addresses and the ending are quality.

Road Warrior is an awesome movie. Feels like Fallout taken on the road, almost.

I'd like to toss in Monty Python And The Holy Grail. Absolutely hilarious comedy:

"V for Vendetta"

"Sweeny Todd: The Demon Butcher of Fleet Street"

I have to strongly agree with some of the movies already mentioned : Memento, 80s Animated Transformer Movie (god that brings me back), Tombstone, and 13th Warrior (Wild is right, this is an awesome viking movie)

Some of my personal favorites that I've watched over and over are

The Fifth Element

Driven (w/Stallone)

Spirited Away (awesome anime, I don't know how popular it is/was)

Zeitgeist (for the conspiracy minded out there :) )

The Adventures of Pluto Nash (this movie got terrible reviews for Eddie Murphy, I thought it was pretty good tho)

A movie I recently watched and was very surprised with was 7 pounds w/ Will Smith. It's a little lovey dovey but Rosario Dawson had me pulled in to this movie. Maybe a good flick to watch with the girlfriend/wife.

COMBAT SHOCK (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090866/) [1986]

User Comment from IMDB:
You think you have bad days? Try watching this movie about a day in the life of Ricky (Ricky Giovinazzo, billed as "Ricky G"). He is a shell shocked Vietnam vet who may have massacred his own men, he is in debt to the local loan shark, he cannot find a job, his wife (Veronica Stock) is nagging him constantly, he is about to be evicted from his crummy Staten Island apartment and his rich dad is senile, has lost his fortune, lives in a nursing home and thinks his son is dead. Okay, now how was YOUR day? This movie was marketed by the folks at Troma Films as a RAMBO clone. I think a lot of people who rented it thinking they would see lots of fight scenes and explosions had to pick their jaws up off the floor long before it ended. Try not to flinch when you see a junkie tear open his vein with a coat hanger (and look what's on the end of that hanger!) and cram heroin into his bleeding wound. I dare you not to look away when you see Ricky's infant son, an Agent Orange mutated . . .thing. In fact, this whole picture will leave you in a cold sweat and sleeping with the lights on . ..or TRYING to sleep anyway. Filmed on a budget of, well, nothing by Buddy Giovinazzo this film was thrown out of 50, yes FIFTY, film festivals because it was just too darn hard hitting and realistic for many peoples tastes. The cut version, COMBAT SHOCK is on video but several mail order sources have the uncut version, which is the cinematic equivalent of a sucker punch. This time the cliched old line "See it if you dare" is a legitimate warning. Oh, and a word of advice: under no circumstances watch this film and DEADBEAT AT DAWN on the same night. Consider yourself warned.

So...

I'll admit, I've been decently out of touch with movies for the last couple of years, since I've been focusing too much on games.

This thread is to suggest films, TV Shows, whatever you feel is worth watching (could even be plays or performance groups). Basically, give me and everyone else your favorites, or even tell us something cool coming up.

Personally, I'm into everything from cheese, to cool Anime, serious, weird, to artsy films. So if any of you have some great suggestions there, please let me know.

Here are a few of my favs.

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0347246/

- A dark, stunning anime, with very cryptic, smart and inspiring undertones. While a bit slow moving, and largely missing the main star of the series, I found it to still come off as a beautiful and excellent film.

http://internetservices.readingeagle.com/blog/moviehouse/ghost%20innocence.jpg

Immortel Ad Vitam

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314063/

- A lower budget futuristic sci-fi french film (full english acted version) based on a trilogy of graphic novels by Enki Bilal (he also directed the film), that has an interesting egyptian myth slant. I love the art style, and the setting, and also found the mood, and music are all very cool and interesting. The story surrounds the god Horus who has been sentenced to death for rebellion, and posseses a political exile to do his bidding. Some might find it slow, personally I loved it.

http://www.upv.es/bib/bibliotecas/bib_infoapp/Imagenes/Immortel.jpg

Tromeo and Juliet

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114733/

One of my favorite movies. Full on B-movie shock and cheese, done very well. Full of extreme violence, overt sex jokes, references, nudity, wierd shock moments (live nipple piercing), that somehow comes out great, perhaps due to actually having, and following a storyline, unlike some of their other films (by Troma, of Toxic Crusader fame). It even has Lemmy from Motorhead. Definitely worth watching, if the above sounds at all appealing.

Cool, well the description on IMDB sounds interesting enough

"A modern day, alternate-reality drama about a hero who rises to become the King of his nation, based on the biblical story of King David. "

Unfortunately, I'm in Canada, so I can't use Hulu. I can probably still find it though.

I'll try not to list movies already mentionned and for those interested, I'll even name some Quebec movies that you certainly have never seen, but are totally worth watching if you get a chance.

Some of my favorites :

-Shawshank Redemption

-LotR trilogy ( shame on you if you haven't seen it :P )

-Casino Royale ( I never get tired of that movie )

-The longest yard (with Adam Sandler, fun movie)

-Click (that one resonated with me and it's impossible to hold the tears at the end)

-Wall-E (there are some interesting elements in that movie, it's not just a kids cartoon)

-Batman Begins

-The Dark Knight ( worth watching just to see Heath Ledger as the joker, you've all seen it already anyway )

-Army of Darkness ( an old movie with Bruce Campbell...Clatu Verata Nik-cough cough cough-u hehe )

-Spiderman 1-2 ( the 3rd one was disappointing, but I thought the first 2 were great )

-Fight Club

-Get Smart ( for fun AND Anne Hathaway...)

-Dan in real life ( I liked it )

-The Rock ( Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage )

-Defiance ( with Daniel Craig, I liked it )

-Swordfish

-Shooter (with Mark Walhberg)

-Slevin ( AWESOME MOVIE, best script, how did I not think of this one earlier )

-Someone like you ( movie to watch with your gf, I liked this one )

-28 Days later (my favorite horror movie, the sequel wasn't as good)

-Enemy of the State

-Mr. et Mrs. Smith ( funny and sexy )

-Princess Mononoke ( my favorite anime )

Movies from Quebec (they're really worth it if you see the DVD)

-La Grande Séduction ( Seducing doctor Lewis, great comedy)

-Bon cop, bad cop ( popcorn action flick, worth watching to to hear Colm Feore swear in french hehe : **** de merde de **** de **** de TABARNAC )

-Les trois p'tits cochons ( The three little pigs, awesome movie about relationships )

-Maurice Richard ( The Rocket, tells the life of the best hockey player, great movie )

Thats it for now :)

Cool, thanks for all the suggestions everyone. Here are a few more of my favs.

Night Watch

Based around a group of vampires called 'Others' divided into the light and dark, I found the movie to be quite captivating, despite its often bordering on cheeseball tendencies. Thoroughly recommended, as it all comes together into a pretty powerful movie by the end. I beleive its the highest budget movie to come out of Russia. Its sequel Day Watch is also quite good, but the triligy finale has yet to be made.

The Thing

Perhaps already mentioned, the Thing is one of my new favorite horror films. Many of its aspects have been riffed by numerous games (Resident Evil) and no doubt other movies for years.

http://www.horror-movies.ca/AdvHTML_Upload/TheThing09_1.jpg

Lust Caution

Directed by Ang Lee, of Brokeback Mountain fame. It is an espionage thriller with erotic tendencies, set in WWII-era Shanghai. A group of students plot to assassinate a well known government traitor, by having one of the female members use their acting skill to get close to the officer through seduction. I loved it, very much worth checking out.

Barbarella

An entirely entertaining dose of 60's sci-fi sexed up cheese. Who doesn't want to see Jane Fonda at her peak of hotness slip into hot new outfits every other scene while taking on aliens, and crazy space dudes.

Ya, I've seen Day Watch, didn't quite like it as much as Night Watch, but they are both great.

Of note, I finally got to check out GITS: Solid State Society, and while I think I passed out near the end, it definitely seemed pretty sweet. I'll have to pick up the english dubbed version pretty soon, as subs are tough late at night.

haha, yay definitly lots of dialogue, long speaking/explanation parts in this one. But kickass story, albiet convoluted, great action like usual and quality production work. I'm one of the "desperatly clinging to additional GITs movies/episodes being released" people... lol

The convoluted GiTS plots are a large part of why I like 'em. I wouldn't consider them unnecessarily complicated, but they are always pretty intriguing. Still need to finish watching season 2, but I'm sure once I'm done that, I'll be joining you in the wait.

So the latest streaming netflix film i watched was actually an Uwe Boll movie.
BUT, before you ridicule me for even bothering with another film of his, this is honestly the FIRST film that is semi-respectable from him... Tunnel Rats.

Still only about a 5/10.
The Good:: Surprisingly good acting (discovering new talent?), impressive production quality (sets, explosions affects, lighting, etc), fairly good dialogue.
The Bad:: Typical craptastic directing by Uwe. Utterly ridiculous storyline (military base crotch-deep in the jungle in the middle of trees with no clearing around it, no perimeter no guards, and no heli drop? WTF, inaccuracy MUCH?!), constant disregard for historical accuracies (weapons, references, lingo, dress, and common sense).

This kinda story in any other filmmakers hands could have been an epic masterpiece. But alas Uwe Boll got his hands on it. Still somewhat crappy, but to be sure, it is now Uwe Boll's least crappy film thus far. If you happen to catch this streaming or a super cheap rent out of boredom, try your very very very very damndest to ignore "The Bad" that i pointed out, and perhaps you can enjoy the film a bit better.

Every time that man makes a film, several hundred babies die.
Tunnel Rats, in this case, only killed a couple hundred.
lol :)

Dear God, no. Only a few of his movies are worth the time and money.

The only one I can wholeheartedly recommend is Postal. The premise for the Postal games is already ridiculous and cheezy, so it fit perfectly with Uwe Boll's ability to take something serious and turn it into laughable ****.
