I only really liked one anime ever and that's Gundam Wing. Never got into the other Gundam series, just Wing.

Endless Waltz was probably the coolest movie I'd ever seen when I was about 9 or so.

Used to be a BIG Otaku back in the day, but I've scaled down my anime watching habits...

Current favs:

- Naruto
- Bleach
- One Piece
- Hitman Reborn
- Negima

Classic favorites:
- DBZ
- Gundam (any series)
- Ghost in the Shell (new animated series, and flims)

Most of current anime watching habits involve watching flims or OVAs.

I used to watch Gundam Wing in high school, but then I graduated into Berserk, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, Metropolis...ummm...I have all 4 Blue Submarine #6 but I honestly don't remember them at all (should eBay 'em), Blood: The Last Vampire, Akira, and the Animatrix.

And Jin-Roh, which I consider one of my favorite movies of any genre.

I can't stand Anime books.
What with their reading backwards and oversimplified problems (and really weird lookin' faces).

And the TV shows are horrible (IMO) as well.
Poorly drawn and hilarious.
But not hilarious on purpose.

DBZ, Gundam Wing, Full Metal Panic, Death Note, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Afro Samurai, the original Pokemon, and Berserk.

I haven't seen many others besides those, and I'm opposed to watching cutesy/harem crap. I never got around to Ninja Scroll, though I probably should someday.

Animatrix was good, though there seemed to be a real fetish for snapping tendons and tearing of limbs at certain points (you know which ones I mean :-P ). I like Akira for the most part, but the gory/bloody section at the end was a bit... "lengthy", I guess you could say? Disturbed me for weeks afterwards.

Also, Berserk's ending was ridiculous (yes I know the manga continues on from there).

The Oblivion

Ninja Scroll is overrated, but as an action-only experience, it's decent.

The Berserk manga, at least where I am, has gotten totally revolting.

I'm super picky when it comes to anime.
The few i have ever gotten into are...

Ghost in the Shell (Movies & TV Series)
Ergo Proxy
Samurai Champloo
Appleseed
Renaissance
Vexille
Samurai 7 (only a little of it)

And i watched a bit of Full Metal Alchemist when it first came out. 8 years ago. :)
Hmm thats it.
Can't stand most anime though.

If anyone knows GiTs, and can recommend something along those lines...
i.e. serious, future & social retrospectives, clean lined non-comical, non-old school anime... then holler!

thanks.
cheers!

Much of what was already said plus:

King of Bandit Jing http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0380120/

I'm sure many would disagree with me, but something about this one just clicked with me and I really cannot explain it. Too short, only like 8 or 9 episodes.

Because no one else mentioned it: Vampire Hunter D, this was the first anime I ever saw and it has a special place in my heart.

EDIT: how do you call movie like advent children, ice age, etc in english ? are they anime too ? in France it's the same name, but dunno it in english...if s.o can light me up, it'll be nice^^We just call those 3D animations or CGI. When most people say "Anime" they refer to the 2D japanese artstyle. Meaning Pixar animated films such as Wall-E does not make the cut. Though some anime tries to blend with 3D, like in Appleseed or Vexille, they still have the same characteristics as their 2D counterparts do. Same body & eye shapes, exaggerated expressions, etc...
It's debatable whether Advent Children is anime or not, on one hand it shares a similar type of character design but there's no cell-shading used whatsoever. It looks more like a longer and and upgraded "final fantasy FMV" to me.

Anyone ever watch Samurai 7?

I'm watching it now, and it's quite good.

As for my favorites:

Berserk (aside from the ending)
DBZ (OVER 9000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Deathnote (only watched to Episode 20-something)
Full Metal Panic
Gundam Wing
Neon Genesis Evangelion (if only for the weird ending)

...and a few more I might be forgetting.

I also liked Totoro and some other anime movies like that back in the day.

HONORABLE MENTION: Afro Samurai (good, but not long enough)

EDIT:

As a forewarning for anyone giving me recommendations, I despise Naruto's cast of characters and I'm not into gory/horror/harem animes.

You know what I both love and hate about anime series? They're disappointingly short, but at the same time you know they'd mess up those shows if they continued them.

I'm for the classics myself. The newer ones are a little too weird anymore for my tastes. I believe my all time favorites were DBZ and Gundam Wing. Anyone remember this...http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4hb5e_amv-gundam-wing-last-resort-papa-ro_ads (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4hb5e_amv-gundam-wing-last-resort-papa-ro_ads) (Ok not the same one I remember, but you get the idea).

heh, exact opposite for me.
I love new anime modern twists. The weirdness and uniqueness is what i love about em. All old/classic anime always just struck me as cheezy.
Even as a little kid, when i first saw DBZ and other old animes, i didnt like them. I stuck to my american made saturday morning cartoons like spiderman, etc...

The pure reason i am into any anime at all so much later in my life is BECAUSE they finally started making modern, updated, and more unique animes. GiTs, Ergo, and Champloo being great examples of very unique, modern, dark and exceptional animation.

Classic anime does have some great writing though. I admit that.

First anime I ever watched was the Original Robotech series. After that I watched Akira and a few others that I can't remember now. Right now my favorites/currently watching are
Eureka 7
Gungrave
Robotech
All the Miyazaki films
Death Note
Code Geass
Cowboy Bebop
Full metal Alchemist
Trinity Blood
Blood+
Record of the Lodoss war
Venus wars

And so on. I'd love to get some new shows, but at this point, I won't watch anything that doesn't have a big box set. I don't want to track down twenty volumes of dvds. And I'd prefer not to have to track down 10 different seasons, so any suggestions would help. Or help finding eureka 7 as a boxed set.

I just finished watching Samurai 7, and I have to say that it is definitely on my list of favorites now. It's one of the best animes I've ever watched. It has awesome fight scenes, strong character development, and very poignant, mature themes in it about, among other things, unrequited love and purpose in life that it handles extraordinarily well.

Again, I highly, highly recommend the series for anyone who enjoys quality anime. Be forewarned though that it starts out slow.

EDIT:

I should also note that the English voice-over is phenomenal. Excellent acting on every character's part.

Batou079

it followes the ACTUAL manga (the original made up whatever it wanted)
so a lot of things are going to be different, and soon the entire story will be as well. from what ive read, its going to be much better.

so its basically starting from square one. a whole new series.
Ok i been reading release articles and news snippets all over the net and getting completely mixed info.

First, like you said... they are saying it is simply another variation of the same manga (which follows more closely). Kind of disappointing as i wanted to see the storyline continue from the first... But interesting ONLY if it is a BIG difference to the original anime series. So far, it's quite a bit different.

Second, still others say it is in fact the *sequal* to the "first season" of FMA.
But alas, this is obviously false because of the already obvious difference in the story line like dead characters being alive and story elements being different. So despite mixed info, i will assume it is in fact a new variation on the same series.

I just watched the first episode (at work, lol) and i will be very interesting if the story line stays as changed as it was in the first episode!!

MADDGOAT
05-22-2009, 05:02 AM
IIRC, FMA had a plotline involving "their" world and "ours", do they try to explain this as another "world", or do they just completely ignore the original anime?

TonyOrtiz15

One Piece.

That's all I still follow.

On occasion, I'll knock out a good 26 or 50 episode series if everyone says it's good.

I just watched the Macross Movie and have to say its changed my opinion on all this anime stuff. I've read 3-4 robotech the macross saga books (which were a pain in the but to find) after discovering one with a cool picture on it at the library several years ago.

The movie is now one of my favorite movies, for some reason I just found it incredibly well written and presented. Considering I watched it on youtube with english subs and japanese VO, I think thats rather impressive.

The main reason I liked it so much was the fact that none of the characters were little annoying kids that have to scream everything and over-do anything. Then the story was extremely well told with connections to the real world everywhere which made it that much more entertaining.

It also had planes, that turn into robots, and half planes, and go really fast, and shoot lots of missiles, and are just plain awesome. The character relationships also made sense *looks at star ocean sitting on the floor* they weren't super deep but they certainly weren't shallow.

I'd recommend it to anyone who likes anime or just a good sci-fi movie in general. I'm almost considering buying the english version of the movie and base series...

The screaming kid plague is more evident in modern mainstream shows.
I recommend you check out Macross Plus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCEpsGlHl1I). It's available as either a 4 part OVA or a later re-edited full feature film. Probably my favorite Macross film, it's great.

Batou079
05-27-2009, 12:53 PM
it does. there are A LOT if differences in the story, but for right now its heading the same place. However, according to the manga, about half way through, EVERYTHING will be new.

FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
What a dissappoitment!!! Every episode follows the SAME storyline, and the same event that took place in the previous version. The only thing that changes is slight changes to how each episode plays out.

*SPOILER*
For example in the third episode, there is no undead bird creature, or giant statues in town attacking the Elrics, etc. It is only a closed fight that ends quite abruptly.

If every episode is the same with only these slight differences, then i will pass on watching the series again. I liked it how it was, and so far the changes have made things seem less sensational. I'll watch a couple more just to see... i was hoping more for a continuation of the series, not a slight change in screenplay of each episode... *sigh*

Just to clarify something about FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. The reason the first few episodes are the same is because the original anime's first few episodes followed the manga, however most of the original anime changed the story. Brotherhood on the other hand will follow the manga exactly. So around episode +30 you will start to notice some major differences. Oh and the manga story is far more epic than the original anime's.

it's not that the storys are all going to be the same. it's that the new version is following the manga series which is kinda the same for a while but get dramatically different later on.

it does. there are A LOT if differences in the story, but for right now its heading the same place. However, according to the manga, about half way through, EVERYTHING will be new.

Since shika kept saying that death note was so good, I decided to read the manga. I am at chapter 50, and god is it boring now. Why the hell didn't Raito just take the eyes and kill L? For how smart he is, he is an idiot. If it was me, I would have made it seem like it was three-four people doing the killings from the beginning using the notes time rule. That way they would have suspected way more people and he wouldn't be a prime suspect.

Death Note is okay and .hack...I can't remember much of it.

I more of an OVA/flim fan because I can't devote the time to watch an entire series...

Code Geass is actually really good.

New Naruto and Bleach chapters just came out. Both are kick *** and both are going to have even more kick *** chapters next week.

On a side note, the next Naruto chapter is going to be in colour to calibrate its 10th anniversary. Ahh, Naruto chapter 1, I remember it like it was just yesterday.

Time flies.

But did you see Danzo with the Sharigan!? CRAZY.

Itachi, Sasuke, and Kakashi are all far more powerful then him, so he isn't a threat to anyone at the moment.

I just want to know who he is and how he got his basic sharingan. I currently think he might be Sasuke's dad, because they were planning this from the start. Thats why Itachi killed all of the Uchiha's, because they were planning to take over the village.

P.S. Does anyone else think Sasuke is gonna get the **** kicked out of him at the kage summit? I can't wait!:D
